Camp #2 - Wetland Waders

Camp #2 is done! We have made it through two straight weeks of camp and have one more to go before we get a little break in between camps (for a conference and vacations and a teacher workshop, but at least it's a break in camps).

The kids for this camp were rising 1st and 2nd graders, so the little ones. Very cute. We had kids ranging from 5-7 years old and I'm definitely going to miss them this week when we have the 7th and 8th graders.

The first day of camp each kid got their own personal wading boots that they painted.

We spent a lot of time the first three days in the teaching marsh studying wetlands, the animals, and the plants that live there. The kids loved it! I was really impressed with how much interest they had in going to the same place every day. We netted, used binoculars, collected plants, did a scavenger hunt, etc.

The fourth day we took the kids to York River State Park and we explored the salt marsh and did some chicken netting. There were praying mantis EVERYWHERE in the marsh. Friday, the kids put on a skit for their parents and they had the cutest handmade costumes! It was a good week. Even went out with the "megaboss", as Scott calls him, after work for some drinks!

So cute! Question about the paint for waders: is it permanent, non-toxic, waterproof? Just wondering what type you use since it goes in the water.

We used exterior paint - like you'd use for a house or something like that. So it's waterproof and shouldn't leak anything into the water.

What a great idea you had to have the kiddies paint their own boots!

Another example of stellar leadership by Ms. McGuire. Impressed, as usual, friend!
